"KING:'Fuel Prices have been
deregulated. Nowadays, the fuel prices often go up and down like our
Sensex and Nifty. But, do you think that it will be a feasible thing
to hike the fares of buses and taxis in Kolkata?' HERMIT:'No, it is
not feasible. 70% of the Taxis in Kolkata use fake meters. If your
exact fare is Rs.20, then a fake meter will show the meter reading as
24 units and you are paying Rs.{(24*2) +2} = Rs.50 to
the Taxi Driver. So, automatically, the Taxi owners are having huge
profits. Buses in Bengal are always jam-packed and these buses also
go for extra trips on other routes. Even if the fuel prices get hiked
by Rs. 20 per litre, still the Bus and Taxi Owners will have
profits.'"-Arindam Sain
